In December, it was announced that a new record for the world’s longest train route has been set. Indeed, this is the route from Lagos in Portugal, all the way to Singapore in Asia, vice versa.
Wonderfully, this game-changing route was brought to life by the opening of a railway connection from Laos to Boten on the Chinese border, which connects travellers to Bangkok and Malaysia.
According to travel experts the 11,654-mile journey could be done in 21 days. Meanwhile, the route includes little changes and some overnight stays in iconic cities. Wherever you decide to begin, we’ve compiled a list of the 15 must-see places on the world’s longest train route.
1. Lagos, Portugal
Let’s say you start off in Lagos to end your trip in Singapore. Before riding along the stunning coast of Portugal, chillout in this beach town. Normally frequented with European tourists, expect clear blue waters, sandy coves, and the Atlantic ocean at your feet.
2. Lisbon, Portugal
From fascinating street art, beaches and castles on its doorstep, along with a great culture and nightlife scene…Lisbon is a must-see on the world’s longest train route. Additionally, Portugal was recently crowned the best country for remote working in 2022. Therefore, you could work and travel.
3. Bilbao, Spain
Famed for the Guggenheim Museum, Bilbao is a stunning industrial port city, surrounded by mountains, in the north of Spain.
